Lemme tell ya something that misleads tons of people everyday… and that is those people out there who speak on behalf of a large group. I (and most likely you as well) know many people that do this.
“Lemme tell you about black people…” - says an American of African descent that I work with.
“Lemme tell you something about women…” - says many women I know when talking to me about… women.
“Lemme tell you something about democrats/republicans…” - said by many during the last few months.
…Now, you can easily substitute “lemme tell you something…” with “Men…” or “Women…” or “Blacks…” or “Whites…” or “Christians…” or “Muslims…” etc…..
as in:
“Women will screw you over.” (Yes, for those of you that know me, I have said this… haha, nobody’s perfect…)
“Men are only after sex.” (Now maybe I know a lot of emo dudes or something… but that is definitely not the case with myself and many of the lads I’m cool with…)
“White people are racist.” (A racist comment in its own)
The same goes for those who blame religion, men, blacks, whites, cultures, etc. for problems:
“Religion is what has made this world such a violent and ugly place.” (Ignorant comment…)
I think what spurred this was hearin about books like that He’s Just Not That Into You. To the author, Greg Behrendt: Don’t speak on my behalf. You don’t know me, son. You don’t know what I’ve been through or will go through.
Everybody in life is different. Every person’s life is different. Every situation in life is different.
Generalizing is a dangerous road to walk on…
